Seven years ago I started drawing sketches for my daughter's school lunchbox. My youngest has now entered 1st grade and my daily "Sketches for Nora" has become "Sketches for Nora and Alfred." Twice the daily drawings, twice the illustrationy goodness, same great price... FREE!

Primping for school
To close out Monster Week I thought I would do a version of l'il Medusa. Inspired by the tiny little braids that Amy put in Nora's hair last night before bed.

Wipe your feet!
Kind of on a monster kick lately. This is how I imagine the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" as a kid.

Friends
My inspiration today came from our morning family devotions where we learned about the "bad tempered rhino." Rhinos are very solitary creatures whose only friends are the tick birds who groom them.

baby moni-ster
"Any ideas for your picture tomorrow?" I always ask Nora. Last night, she said- "No...surprise me. Make it something weird." I couldn't think of anything so I drew the baby monitor...with some slight modifications.

Wacky drive-thru
Today we visit a crazy restaurant- unconcerned, the man nonchalantly reaches for his to-go order. I doubt, however, that he will check to see if he received his extra sauce packets nor will he eat while he drives.

too much of a good thing?
To celebrate the 100th birthday of the Girl Scouts, Nora's troop decorated (and ate) cupcakes. This sketch is only a slight exaggeration of the amount of sprinkles Nora and her friends put on their cupcakes- I wonder if there is an existing world record for sprinkles on a cupcake?

Why moose don't wear underwear
I've had a lot of "underwear" requests lately- I guess there isn't anything funnier in second grade than underwear.

Halt!
Nora's request for today's sketch was for a "weird alien." I'm not sure how weird they are but I think they're kinda cute.

Chopper Bunny
Nora requested a bunny so, naturally, I thought of one riding a chopper. Interestingly, this style of handlebars was not originally called "ape hanger," but, rather, "bunny flopper"- a name that never caught on in the chopper community.

Aquarium Royalty
The new frog has taken up residency in the aquarium castle. Was he self appointed or was there an election that we were not aware of? Perhaps, he was royalty all along and we didn't know it- there's a children's book in there somewhere.

SCUBA Frog
Nora got a frog for her fish tank yesterday- very exciting! She is amazed that he never has to come up for air. This must be the reason.

For the boys
Anyone remember the Atari game "Joust?" |
I did these drawings for Nora when she was in first grade. By this time, word of her "lunch drawings" had spread around the class and every day her classmates would gather to see what her dad had drawn for her. I started getting requests from other kids in her class and even did some "commissions" for several of them. So, in order to satisfy some of the boys in her class, I did a few sketches of knights and dragons- some funny and some "serious."

Butterfly egg
This sketch stems from a conversation Nora and I had about butterfly eggs. I can't imagine the poor butterfly that layed that egg- yikes!

the patient lion
Just a fun sketch- inspired by a saying that we use a lot around here- "Whoa! It looks like a bird made a nest in that hair." -usually in the morning. This was colored with watercolor pencils- I love them!
