Platypus- it's what's for dinner

Nora's crazy imagination strikes again- a chef, a platypus and a microwave- this seemed like the obvious solution.

Magical Cow

Nora went to bed without giving a suggestion for today's sketch so I had to rely on the day's events for inspiration.  Bath time immediately came to mind.  Nora performance of this trick in the tub had her brother in stitches- I thought it would be funny with a cow and a glass of milk.

Don ig-JUAN-a

Nora's search for a new animal for me to draw led her to request an iguana- I love how it's shape is similar to the "hand puppet."  If only iguanas had eyebrows...

beached?

Person, animal and place= a scientist, a whale, a pond- I felt a little like the scientist

Snowmen get no respect

"Hey!"

"What the-"

Revenge is sweet
Nora frequently requests snowmen and, more often than not, they get the short end of the stick.  Every once in a while, however, I give them the last laugh.

Sinister Sip

Nora suggested a vulture for her picture today. Immediately I thought to draw it lurking over the fish tank.(we've had a rash of fish casualties recently) I asked Amy if that was too morbid- she said, "Nah, you should make him sipping water out of the fish tank with a straw." Awesome idea, thanks Amy!

darn hippies

Nora's request... (if you couldn't guess) a wooly mammoth, a rock star, and an elevator.  It's virtually impossible to fit anything in an elevator with a mammoth, try it sometime.

Cockatoo-doo

I guess my humor was a little too subtle on this one- she didn't get it.  You win some and you lose some.

the friendly robot

Today's request- a bear and a robot in the forest.  They always say that the bear is probably more frightened of you than you are of it- especially if you are an 8 ft. robot handing out umbrellas.

cake boss?

Here's a favorite of mine- a warthog and the Abominable Snowman in a bakery.  Sometimes the craziest requests are the most fun.

I love you, Kiddo!

If you ask Nora why her dad draws a picture for her lunch every day she'll tell you, "That's one way he shows me that he loves me."  Sometimes that message is implied and sometimes, like in these two sketches, it's a bit more literal.

Here's something you don't see everyday

Person, animal and place again- an angel and a dinosaur in space...yeah, quite an imagination.

Crossbred mutants

For a while, Nora would give me two animals that I would have to combine into one crazy hybrid animal.  This was a lot of fun for both of us, here are two of our favorites.

Toothless

Last night, Nora lost her second front tooth in a week.  This sketch I did for the first tooth she lost.

Groundhog Day 2012

A sketch I did for this year's Groundhog Day- I guess if the annual festival was held in Scranton we would ask a squirrel for his prediction.

Ewww! Naked Turtle

Here's another fun one from Nora's kindergarten- something about naked "heinies" that always makes kids giggle. I like the bird covering his eyes.

the ballerina tree frog

Here's one from earlier this year.  For a while, Nora would give me a person, animal and place as the subject for my sketch each day.  This one happened to be a ballerina and a tree frog in a dance studio- Voila!

"6 More Weeks"

No school today for Nora- I guess, since they haven't used any "snow days" yet this year they are getting one back.  Ironically, it's snowing outside.  So in honor of Puxatony Phil and his annual prognostication, I pulled this one from the archives.  I remember Nora came home from kindergarten that day in tears because she had mistakenly threw her sketch away with her lunch refuse.  I immediately sat down and redrew this one for her so she could have it for her collection.

Why'd you yell "FIRE" when you fell into the chocolate?

This sketch needs a little explanation- for our special Valentine's Day dessert we did chocolate fondue and so, of course, that's what Nora requested for her picture today.  So, what's with Nora in the fondue pot and why is she yelling "fire?"  Well, for the answer to that you have to be a fan of the Smother's Brothers and their skit "I Fell in a Vat of Chocolate."  If you are unfamiliar or want to laugh follow this link to see it: Smother's Brothers "I Fell into a Vat of Chocolate" I'm proud to say that my daughter got the reference and loved the sketch- she was also singing the song when I picked her up from school. :) Mission accomplished!  On a side note- why do they make the cord for fondue pots so dang short?

Happy Valentine's Day!

Okay, one more today, a new one, in honor of St. Valentine.  Not your typical Valentine's Day animal but a request from Nora nonetheless.  It was a challenge to make an ugly hyena "cute" but I think it turned out pretty well.  I still don't think I would be "valentines" with a hyena- although they would be good for a few laughs.

Monkeys are funny

Last post for today- Always remember, you just can't go wrong with a monkey.

Don't look down!

That's better- simple, silly, fun! (don't look down!)

Keep it simple

Sometimes, however, you can get too creative.  This sketch of a frog painting on a window took Nora a minute or two to figure out- once she did, though, it was a hit. (note to self- keep it simple!)

Kindergarten humor

After my list of superheroes was exhausted, it was time to get creative.  The good thing about drawing for a five year old- it's pretty easy to make them laugh and the sillier, the better.

If James Montgomery Flagg drew superheroes

From maleable Plas to rock-hard Ben Grimm a.k.a. The Thing.

Plas loves you!

Plastic Man has always been a favorite of ours- what's not to love about a goofy hero that can mold his body into anything imaginable.  Whenever I am stumped for ideas, I can always fall back on Plas for something crazy and fun! (excuse the food stain- inevitable really, considering a kindergartener took it to lunch with her)

Superheroes 101- Zatana

I thought I would start from near the beginning. Afterall, what's a sketch blog without any sketches. This is an early lunchbox sketch- still in pencil- celebrating some of our favorite comic book characters.
